Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a major androgen hormone. It is formed from testosterone by 5α-reductase in certain tissues like skin, hair follicles, and the prostate gland. It's several times more potent as an androgen than testosterone. 5α-Reductase inhibitors like finasteride and dutasteride work by preventing the conversion of testosterone into DHT.
